When I started developing the rhyme, I knew that I wanted to divide the sections into levels of the dungeon, more or less. I also knew that I wanted to progressively increase the sense of danger and discovery. What I didn’t realize initially was that I also wanted to ramp up a growing sense of despair for our reader regarding the plight of our fated hero.
It also needed a chorus that resonated. Something you could imagine a desperate group of dungeon delvers using as a mantra to bolster their courage and drive themselves forward into the deep dark. I couldn’t settle on one, so I came up with two.
The gold that glitters, the jewel, and crown, You’ll find your fortune beneath the ground.
